Funny true story

To kick things off, let me share a funny story that highlights the beauty of Romania's mountain landscapes. At a SAC Zug, conference on pre-Alps mountain ranges, I shared a series of photos and challenged the audience to guess where they were taken. To their surprise, half of the photos were actually from Romania!

The stunning scenery inspired a group of skiers to travel to Romania and explore the Carpathian Mountains with a professional guide.

If you're interested in experiencing Romania's natural beauty, I recommend checking out my friend Mihai Cozma's travel deals and blog for more information: https://www.mountainguide.ro/

For over 10 years, we have been recommending our friend Iulian Cozma's company for guided mountain tours and ski tours in Romania. We have organized ski tours twice with him in Romania.

HB Wine near Arad in Covăsânț village (near Siria), that will soon offer accomodations as well.

Welcome to the grape escape at HB Wine, the freshest DOC winery just outside of Covasint village in the Arad county, part of the well-known vineyard "Podgoria Minis-Maderat". Tucked away on the outskirts, just a grape's throw from Siria city (only 7 km away!), and a mere wine cork's toss from Arad municipality, the capital of Arad county, the HB Wine winery is the perfect blend of tradition and innovation.

With vines as old as your dad's cheesy jokes (over 30 years!), and a plan to plant new ones like a pro, our grapes are aging like fine wine. And speaking of pros, our winemaker is a seasoned maestro, with more years of experience than you've had bad dates. As for our owner, let's just say they've been swirling and sipping with the best of them for over a decade in the Romanian wine scene. So, grab a glass, sit back, and let the good times pour at HB Wine – where every sip is a celebration!

3. Places to visit in Romania - the choices are abundant!

Bottom line: Romania sure knows how to roll out the red carpet!

Picture roads smoother than a silk scarf, city centers so polished even Cinderella would be green with envy, and hotels and restaurants that'll make you feel like royalty.

  • And the food? It's like a culinary symphony for your taste buds!

  • Service? Impeccable, like it's been fine-tuned by Michelangelo himself.

  • Oh, and did I mention many people speaks English?

  • But wait, there's more – the locals! Friendliness levels? Off the charts! Seriously, pack your bags and prepare to be dazzled by this ancient gem of Europe!

  • Transformation? I couldn't believe my eyes at the transformation Romania has undergone. Some places looked like they'd pulled off a magic trick – I swear I didn't recognize them from my last visit!

  • And those mountains? Picture Carpathian mountains with their caves and peaks and multiple hiking and climbing options. With their majestic peaks and hidden caves, the Carpathian Mountains offer a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, providing countless opportunities for hiking, climbing, and exploring nature's wonders.

  • And those monasteries? Talk about a glow-up! Not only do they offer spiritual rejuvenation, but cozy accommodations and mouthwatering meals too. It's like finding a tranquil oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle!

Here, I'll highlight some areas and special places for you to explore further.

From there, it's on to Sibiu (Hermannstadt), where we'll explore the picturesque squares, charming cafes, and historic landmarks of this Transylvanian gem. Don't miss the iconic Bridge of Lies and the stunning Sibiu Lutheran Cathedral.  Sibiu, or Hermannstadt in German, is a historical gem located in the heart of Transylvania, Romania. Founded in the 12th century by German settlers, Sibiu was the largest and wealthiest of the seven walled citadels. Its impressive buildings and fortifications were paid for by the riches amassed by the city's guilds, and much of the grandeur of its earlier days can still be seen today in Sibiu's Old Town.

The Old Town of  Sibiu has a distinctly Germanic feeling, with sections of the medieval wall still guarding the historic area. Walking along its narrow streets, visitors will see 17th-century buildings with gable overhangs before opening up into vast, church-dominated squares like the Great Square and the Little Square.

Sibiu is a pedestrian-friendly city with two easily accessible levels: the Upper town, home to most of Sibiu's historic sights, and the Lower town, lined with colorful houses on cobblestone streets and bounded by imposing city walls and defense towers overlooking the Cibin River.

Visitors to Sibiu can experience its rich history by exploring the many museums and galleries, including the Brukenthal National Museum, which houses an extensive collection of European and Romanian art, and the Sibiu-Astra National Village Museum a Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, which showcases the culture and traditions of rural Romania.

Sibiu is also known for its lively cultural scene, with numerous festivals throughout the year, including the International Theatre Festival, the Jazz Festival, and the Sibiu International Film Festival. In addition, Sibiu has a reputation for excellent cuisine, offering a diverse range of traditional and modern dishes in its restaurants and cafes.

Finally, we'll make our way to Beiuș, where we'll explore the breathtaking Bear Cave and Rosia Farcu Cave, two natural wonders nestled in the heart of the Bihor Mountains. And last but not least, we'll visit the picturesque village of Gura Vaii near Gura Hont, in Arad County, where we'll soak in the tranquil countryside views and savor the rustic charm of rural Romania.

Here are some additional details regarding each location.

Bran Castle, also known as "Dracula's Castle," is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Transylvania, Romania. Located near the town of Bran, just a short drive from Brasov, the fortress sits on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, on DN73.

A visit to Bran Castle is an unforgettable experience that combines history, culture, and myth. It's the perfect destination for anyone interested in exploring the rich heritage of Transylvania and the surrounding region.

While it is commonly associated with Bram Stoker's Dracula, there is little evidence to support this claim. In fact, Stoker's inspiration for Castle Dracula was an empty mountain top, Mount Izvorul Calimanului, located in the Transylvanian Calimani Alps near the former border with Moldavia.

Regardless of its connection to the famous vampire, Bran Castle is a fascinating piece of history and a national monument of Romania. The castle is now a museum, open to visitors who can explore its interior and learn about its rich history. The museum displays art and furniture collected by Queen Marie and offers both individual and guided tours.

At the bottom of the hill, visitors can also explore a small open-air museum park showcasing traditional Romanian peasant structures like cottages and barns from across the country. It's a great opportunity to learn about Romanian culture and history while enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery.

Inside castle fashion collection "Zestrea" by Liliana Turoiu http://www.lilianaturoiustudio.com/#!album-zestrea/c1kam

Bram Stoker’s character, Dracula, is a Transylvanian Count with a castle located high above a valley perched on a rock with a flowing river below in the Principality of Transylvania.

This character is often confused with Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), sometimes known as Vlad Dracul, who was a Walachian Prince with a castle, now in ruins, located in the Principality of Wallachia. Because Bran Castle is the only castle in all of Transylvania that actually fits Bram Stoker’s description of Dracula’s Castle, it is known throughout the world as Dracula’s Castle. Chapter 2, May 5 of “Dracula” describes the Count’s castle as “. . . on the very edge of a terrific precipice . . . with occasionally a deep rift where there is a chasm [with] silver threads where the rivers wind in deep gorges through the forests. Bram Stoker never visited Romania. He depicted the imaginary Dracula’s castle based upon a description of Bran Castle that was available to him in turn-of-the-century Britain. Indeed, the imaginary depiction of Dracula’s Castle from the etching in the first edition of “Dracula” is strikingly similar to Bran Castle and no other in all of Romania. Stoker is widely purported to have used the illustration of Bran Castle in Charles Boner’s book, "Transylvania: Its Product and Its People", (London: Longmans, 1865) to describe his imaginary Dracula's Castle.

Sighisoara ( in German Schassburg) is a well-preserved medieval town located in Transylvania, Romania. Its citadel was built in the 12th century by Transylvanian Saxons, and it still stands as one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Europe. This World Heritage Site boasts nine towers, cobbled streets, burgher houses, and ornate churches that rival the streets of Old Prague or Vienna.

One of the main attractions of Sighisoara is the house where Vlad Dracula, also known as Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler, was born. This infamous ruler of Walachia inspired Bram Stoker's fictional character Count Dracula. Other attractions include the Church on the Hill, which features 500-year-old frescoes, the 13th century Venetian House, and the Church of the Dominican Monastery, known for its Transylvanian renaissance carved altarpiece, baroque pulpit, Oriental carpets, and 17th-century organ.

Take a stroll through the cobbled streets of Sighisoara's citadel and admire its historic architecture, or climb the Clock Tower for panoramic views of the town. Don't miss the Citadel Square, where you can see the 14th-century Town Hall and the Statue of Vlad Dracula. Sighisoara is a must-see for anyone interested in history, architecture, or the legend of Dracula.

Sarmizegetusa Regia, also Sarmisegetusa, Sarmisegethusa, Sarmisegethuza, (Zarmizegethoúsa) or (Zermizegethoúse), was the capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of the Dacians prior to the wars with the Roman Empire. Erected on top of a 1200 m high mountain, the fortress, comprising six citadels, was the core of a strategic defensive system in the Orastie Mountains (in present-day Romania).

Sarmizegetusa Regia should not be confused with Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the Roman capital of Dacia built by Roman Emperor Trajan some 40 km away, which was not the Dacian capital. Sarmizegetusa Ulpia was discovered earlier, was known already in the early 1900s, and was initially mistaken for the Dacian capital, a confusion which led to incorrect conclusions being made regarding the military history and organization of the Dacians.

Crystal Farcu Cave and Lazuri Keys Trekking-Rosia, Bihor County:

Discover the breathtaking beauty of the Crystal Cave from Farcu Mine, a hidden gem found within the mining area of Rosia de Bihor. This stunning cave was discovered in 1987 and named for its extraordinary crystal formations, becoming one of the newest additions to the national tourist circuit. Despite being closed due to damaging mining activity, the cave was restored to European standards and opened to the public in 2012, allowing visitors to witness its unparalleled beauty firsthand.

Located in the unspoiled rural area of Rosia Commune, Bihor County, the village offers a chance to experience traditional hamlets and agro-tourism. The mining history of the area dates back to 1915, with a significant increase in bauxite exploitation in the 1940s. After a brief period of activity following the discovery of the Crystal Cave, the mine closed, preserving the untouched crystal formations.

Padurea Craiului Mountains, in which the cave is located, is a geological wonder with a diverse landscape of limestone rock formations, sinkholes, canyons, and gorges. With over 500 caves discovered in the area, the development of speleological tourism has allowed visitors to explore the hidden treasures of the underground karstic relief, including the Crystal Cave from Farcu Mine.

Alba Iulia, also known as Karlsburg, Carlsburg, Weißenburg, or Gyulafehérvár, is a city located in Transylvania, Romania, with a population of 63,536 as of 2011. Since the High Middle Ages, it has been the seat of Transylvania's Roman Catholic diocese and was the capital of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom and later the Principality of Transylvania from 1541 to 1690. Alba Iulia is historically significant for Hungarians, Romanians, and Transylvanian Saxons. The city's fortress, with seven bastions in a stellar shape, was constructed between 1716 and 1735 by two Swiss fortification architects, Giovanni Morandi Visconti and Nicolaus Doxat de Demoret. The fortress is the best-preserved example of Menno van Coehorn's new Dutch system. In 1918, representatives of the Romanian population of Transylvania and Transylvanian Saxons gathered in Alba Iulia to proclaim the union of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania. In 1922, Ferdinand of Romania was symbolically crowned King of Romania in Alba Iulia, and in 2012, his great-granddaughter Princess Margarita of Romania visited the city to commemorate the event.

Arsenie Boca (29 September 1910 – 28 November 1989) was a Romanian Orthodox monk, theologian, and artist. He was persecuted by the Communists and named among the 100 greatest Romanians. Remarking on his artistic talent, professor Costin Petrescu entrusted him to paint the scene that represents Mihai Viteazul from the Romanian Athenaeum. Sent by his bishop, he traveled to Mount Athos for documentation and spiritual experience.

He was born on 29 September 1910, in Vata de Sus, in what was then Austria-Hungary, and his parents gave him the first name Zian. He studied at the ”Avram Iancu” National High School, graduating it in 1929. The same year he starts to study at the Theological Academy in Sibiu, which he graduated in 1933. He received a scholarship from the archbishop of Transylvania to study at the Institute of Bellearte in Bucharest. Meanwhile, he attended the medical classes of professor Francisc Rainer and the Christian Mystics class of professor Nichifor Crainic. Original text: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenie_Boca

Intro - Deutsche Version:

Gute Reise!
